Used Car Buying Guide

Buying a used car does not need to be stressful. A few simple checks can help you choose the right car with confidence.

Used car buying checklist

  1. Set your budget

Think about the purchase price, monthly payments, insurance, tax, fuel, maintenance and contingency costs.

  2. Check running costs

Look at fuel economy, tyres, servicing, road tax and insurance group before choosing.

  3. Review mileage and age

Mileage should be considered alongside age, condition and service history.

  4. Look at service history

A good history can show how the car has been maintained.

  5. Check MOT history

Review advisories and recurring issues where possible.

  6. Inspect tyres and brakes

Uneven wear, low tread or vibration can point to maintenance needs.

  7. Check bodywork and interior

Look for damage, mismatched paint, warning lights, damp smells or missing equipment.

  8. Test drive the car

Listen for unusual noises and check steering, braking, clutch, gearbox and comfort.

  9. Ask about warranty

Confirm what warranty option applies, what is covered and what is excluded.

  10. Understand finance before signing

Finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. Read the agreement carefully.
